The Rivalry Begins

Sophia Martinez had exactly three rules for surviving law school: work harder than everyone else, never show weakness, and absolutely, under no circumstances, let James Wellington get the better of her.

Unfortunately, James seemed determined to make that last rule impossible to follow.

"Ms. Martinez," Professor Hayes announced, "you'll be partnering with Mr. Wellington for the mock trial competition."

Sophia's pen snapped in her grip. Across the lecture hall, James's perfectly sculpted eyebrow arched in what she could only describe as smug satisfaction. With his designer suits, trust fund confidence, and infuriating habit of being right about everything, James represented everything Sophia had fought against her entire life.

"This should be interesting," James murmured as they were forced to sit together, his voice carrying that upper-class accent that made Sophia's teeth clench. "Try to keep up, scholarship girl."

Sophia's dark eyes flashed. "Try not to coast on daddy's reputation, trust fund boy."

The Battle Lines Are Drawn

Their first study session was a disaster. They argued about everything—case precedents, legal strategies, even the temperature of the library. James thought Sophia was too aggressive; Sophia thought James was too cautious. He criticized her "emotional" approach to law; she mocked his "privileged" perspective.

"You think because you've never had to fight for anything, you understand justice?" Sophia snapped, slamming her textbook shut.

James's jaw tightened. "And you think because you've had to struggle, you have a monopoly on righteousness?"

They stared at each other across the table, both breathing hard, both too proud to back down. The tension between them was electric, dangerous, and neither wanted to acknowledge the way their hearts raced when they argued.

Cracks in the Armor

The turning point came during a late-night study session, fueled by caffeine and desperation. They were arguing about a particularly complex case when Sophia, exhausted and frustrated, finally admitted, "I don't know the answer. Okay? I don't know."

James blinked, surprised by her vulnerability. The smugness was gone, replaced by something softer. "Neither do I," he admitted. "But maybe if we stopped trying to win and started trying to learn, we could figure it out together."

It was the first time they'd ever agreed on anything, and it changed everything. For more on this, see our post on second chance romance.
