Isabella Rosetti had been raised to understand that love was a luxury her family couldn't afford. As the daughter of the Italian ambassador to England, her marriage would be a political alliance, her heart a bargaining chip in international relations. William's smile was both charming and dangerous. "Perhaps we could compare notes sometime. I find that truth often lies somewhere between opposing perspectives."
Isabella knew she should walk away, should remember her duty, her family's expectations, the centuries of conflict between their nations. Instead, she found herself saying, "Perhaps we could."
The Thrill of the Forbidden
Their first clandestine meeting was arranged under the pretense of diplomatic courtesy—a tour of the embassy's art collection, chaperoned by Isabella's elderly aunt who conveniently fell asleep in the library. As William admired the Renaissance paintings, Isabella found herself studying his profile, the way the afternoon light caught the gold in his brown hair.
"This is madness," she whispered as they stood before a painting of star-crossed lovers. "If my father knew..."
