The Chemistry Coach
Dr. Samantha Rivers had been a relationship therapist for ten years, but she'd never been asked to consult on a romance novel before. The author, bestselling novelist Victoria Cross, had specifically requested her expertise after readers complained that her latest hero and heroine had "zero chemistry" despite being perfectly matched on paper.
"I don't understand it," Victoria said, pacing around Samantha's office with a manuscript clutched in her hands. "They're both attractive, successful, they have shared interests and compatible goals. Why don't readers believe they're falling in love?"
Samantha accepted the manuscript and flipped through the pages, noting the technically proficient but emotionally flat dialogue, the perfectly choreographed but passionless romantic scenes. "Tell me," she said, "when you write their interactions, what are you thinking about?"
"Plot progression," Victoria replied immediately. "Making sure they hit the right story beats, that their relationship develops according to the three-act structure."
"And what about the characters themselves? What do they want from each other beyond the plot requirements?"
Victoria paused, clearly not having considered the question. "I... I'm not sure."
Samantha smiled gently. "That's your problem. You're writing a relationship, but you're not writing the people in it. Chemistry isn't about compatibility—it's about desire, tension, the specific way two unique individuals affect each other."
As if to demonstrate her point, Samantha's office door opened and Dr. James Chen, her research partner, entered with two cups of coffee. The way Victoria's eyes followed his movement, the slight flush that crept up her neck, the way she unconsciously smoothed her hair—Samantha recognized the signs of instant attraction.
